Hen’s Night. Bachelorette party. Bridal Shower. All terms to describe the coming together of ladies to celebrate the imminent marriage of the Hen. It usually involves copious amounts of alcohol, silly games, and sillier costumes. Luckily for me, and everyone else, the Hen in question is one of the classiest ladies you will ever meet, so the standard Hen’s Night debauchery was totally off the menu. Thank god. What did we do instead? We drank great wine and ate beautiful food.
The Hen’s Bridesmaid had organised a gorgeous night. First, wine tasting at Wine Odyssey at The Rocks, then a quick hop over the road to Pony Lounge & Dining for more drinks, then dinner. Unfortunately most of my pics from Wine Odyssey were terrible! But a quick run down: The Wine Journey Room has a olarge selection of wines specially stored so you can taste to your heart’s content! You are given a card that you can charge with credit (we all bought $20) or you can run a tab and pay at the end. The wines can be poured by the taste (25ml), half glass (75ml) or full glass (150ml). Each wine has a value associated with each pour, so on average a taste is around $2 through to over $30 for the Penfolds Grange! We all sipped our way through the wines over the course of an hour or so..mixing and matching and loving the availability of fresh glass that we didn’t have to wash up!
Across the road to Pony for some more pre dinner drinks and we are seated outside on the terrace overlooking The Orient Hotels’ beer garden, as we wait while our table is prepared. They soon seat us at the communal table still outside on the terrace. We all look over the menu and as there are so many of us, we throw our hands up in exasperation and ask them to just bring out one of everything on the tasting menu…Lucky for me I’m at one end and seem to get a taste of everything!
There is no particular order to the food as it all came out in bits and pieces or was passed up and down the table. Descriptions are as best I can gather with tasting. Pony isn’t traditional tapas as evidenced by the decidedly Asian twist on the menu. Steamed edamame with Murray River pink salt and and chilli salted almonds..The almonds were warm and so moreish…
The seared sirloin with soy, lime, chilli & ginger dressing was gorgeous and perfectly cooked, while the goats cheese, zucchini, potato and parsley frittata was a little on the bland side for me. Needed copious seasoning to bring out such mild flavours, particularly so when matched with such gutsy tastes like chilli, and chorizo.
These woodfired pork and fennel chipolatas with tomato relish, were not a favourite in comparison to the chorizo, nor did I try the icecream like chicken liver pate, with sweet and sour onions & sourdough.
The dishes which I didn’t get decent pics of, but were stand out favourites were the citrus cured salmon, shaved fennel with orange, the tasting plate of grilled chorizo, manchego cheese, murupi chillies, marinated olives, butter bean and tomato salad, cumquat and pear chutney, the baked eggplant, basil & fetta rolls with tomato sugo and finally the grilled chorizo with chilli jam…
I love Pony for a casual drink and something to nibble on to a fun full on dinner, and Wine Odyssey, even for a non-drinker like me is a fun way to try some interesting wines. With their great location in the Rocks within spitting distance of each other these are fab venues for all sorts of adventures!
