An easy weeknight, neighbourhood dinner. We’ve exhausted most of the cheap and cheerful options in our immediate vicinity of Surry Hills, and we’ve heard through the grapevine that what was once The Flinders Hotel has had a change of image and ownership and is now The Local Taphouse, a beer emporium.
I figure this is brilliant for the Boyfriend as he loves his beer, so after checking out the menu we head on over.
The interior is very dark, so no interior shots I’m afraid, but take my word, very cool, hip and funky, with mismatched and clustered armchairs and couches, old industrial looking lighting and a series of suspended letters over the bar spelling out beer.
We think about heading upstairs as the main bar is actually quite noisy, but there’s a private function being held. So we hang out at our window seat perched high on stools.
The menu is great, with a range of options to suit most appetites and situations from a drink after work with a small sustaining nibble to individual pizzas and substantial mains. There are groups noshing on shared platters of nibbles, and a couple of ladies chowing down on the pizzas that look great.
We settle on a couple of mains, and order while keeping an eagle eye out for one of the few small tables located down one side of the bar (also the only spot with adequate light for photo taking!)
The Boyfriend goes for his usual steak, with the available option being a fillet steak marinated in stout with pommes anna, a roasted field mushroom & sauteed spinach and a Little Creatures Pale Ale (on tap). When I ordered I stuffed up by not ordering medium well-done as boyfriend likes it, but medium. The steak comes out fairly pink and bleeding and we ended up sending it back to be further cooked. This was entirely my fault for not ordering carefully enough:

The potatoes are tasty but incredibly oily!
I decide on the whole whole roasted baby snapper with cherry tomatoes, capers, olives and roast potato:
I love that this fish comes whole, with it’s head, and though I don’t eat eyes, I appreciate that it’s there, and it’s fierce teeth! Now you know why it’s called a snapper! The capers are tangy and provide contrast to the sweet tomatoes.
I could have done with some more potato as the dish is so light. But it was delicious. The boyfriend was fascinated by my slow and deliberate dissection of my little fishy friend, and I did manage to get through most of it.
But still, we wanted dessert! Being perfect pear season it had to be the poached pear in a cinnamon, clove & star anise spiced syrup with icecream.
The serve of ice cream was pretty small, but we end up fighting over the perfectly poached pear.
The Local Taphouse is a great little pub serving a wide range of specialist beer for the aficionado, with some great beer focussed dinners and events. Also check out the beer tasting paddle! I’d really like to go back and try more of the extensive and diverse menu.
The Local Taphouse is a little on the expensive side, both for the beer and the food (the mains), with a little too much attitude from the “too cool for school” staff. But these are only minor quibbles in a great addition to the neighbourhood.
