An easy weeknight, neighbourhood dinner. We’ve exhausted most of the cheap and cheerful options in our immediate vicinity of Surry Hills, and we’ve heard through the grapevine that what was once The Flinders Hotel has had a change of image and ownership and is now The Local Taphouse, a beer emporium.

It’s a birthday! Not mine of course, there will be plenty of notice of that, don’t you worry! 😉 It is however, the birthday of one of my oldest, closest friends. At the time of her birthday she did not know that her husband had conspired to throw her a surprise birthday dinner, so this lunch was to be the extent of her catch up with friends for this occasion. Let me tell you, I did a wonderful job keeping the secret that I would be seeing her that very same evening at A Tavola in Darlinghurst for dinner (an upcoming post).
Easter long weekend, and it’s raining. I’ve already dragged the poor boyfriend out for a 3 hour walk to shops that were closed. So, it’s off for a pub lunch to one of the newer additions to the dining/pub scene in Kings Cross, The Sugarmill.
We were told by many that we shouldn’t stay in Margaret River because the accommodation would be up to 30% more expensive..so from the glossy tourist brochures, and the web we settled on Busselton. Situated in Geographe Bay, Busselton seems to be the equivalent of Batemans’ Bay for Canberrans. A lovely seaside town, not too far from home, with some decent restaurants and cafes…The main attraction being the historic Busselton Jetty… So I managed to find a wine and food tour of the Margaret River that wasn’t for old people!

My favourite pub in Western Australia. The one place everyone had told us to visit: The Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle.
Unfortunately for you, and me, for some reason I lost all my food photos!
Sitting on the harbour, the Brewery is housed in converted ship sheds looking out to the Indian Ocean. Every night we were in Freo we ate here sitting in the delightful beer garden, fully equipped with a bocce green!
Hello all! It’s great to be home, and I have a fistful of treats from out Western Australia way!
From Scarborough in the northern beaches of Perth, to chic and classy dining in the CBD, to the glorious wine region of the Margaret River to beachside dining in Busselton and harbourside in Fremantle!
Bondi. The girls look different there. More shiny, more tanned, more blonde, more trendy…it’s quite overwhelming for someone as deeply unfashionable (and brunette) as I! Still, we had friends to visit, and food to be eaten.
I hadn’t gone to the Beach Road Hotel in years…this enormous space, with multiple drinking areas has always been a magnet for a mixed crowd. This night was no exception. Walking through the main bar, past some rusted on regulars, through to the bistro area (where it appears that a small child’s birthday was taking place) and out the back to the courtyard where the pretty young things, and the smokers were hanging out.
